Not All Students Can Easily Access Maple Grove Elementary’s Playground
At Maple Grove Elementary, a group of students recognized a gap in ADA accessibility when they saw Ian, a friend who uses a walker for mobility, unable to participate in popular recess activities. Instead of accepting Ian’s inability to use the playground, they asked the question: How can we make our playground even more inclusive?
Students like Ian and friends have highlighted an opportunity for our community to create a more adaptive playscape. The current playground meets and exceeds ADA standards, though ADA standards don’t always accommodate varying levels of mobility. The spectrum of mobility and accessibility is vast.
In partnership with the Waukee Community School District and Waukee Community Schools Foundation, we are raising funds to install additional playground equipment so every student can experience the joy of playscapes.
